If you are preparing for PTE Academic in Perth, start by checking the score requirement for your purpose. A target copied from an old video or social media post could send your preparation in the wrong direction.Â
Home Affairs uses different PTE Academic thresholds for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. The familiar targets of 50, 65 and 79 in every skill belong to the earlier test requirements. Check your test date and the relevant official page before choosing a target.Â
Current PTE Academic score requirements
The table below shows Home Affairs’ current minimum component scores for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Requirements checked on 13 October 2026.Â
| English category | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
| Competent | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 |
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 |
Â
These are English proficiency categories, not a universal entry requirement for every Australian application. Confirm the category your visa requires. Universities, professional registration bodies and skills assessment authorities may have their own requirements.Â
Why an overall score is not enough
Compare each component with its required minimum. For example, a candidate with Listening 80, Reading 80, Writing 84 and Speaking 88 has not reached the current Superior English Writing threshold. Stronger results in the other components do not change that minimum.Â
Use this comparison to set priorities. If Writing is the remaining gap, review your written responses before spending another week repeating the same general mock-test routine.Â
Turn your score target into a study plan
Write down your required Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking scores beside your latest results. Then review the work behind each gap. A low Speaking result deserves a review of recordings, content coverage and delivery. A Reading gap calls for a review of comprehension across the relevant tasks, including Summarise Written Text.Â
For Writing, inspect complete responses. Check whether your essay answers the exact question and explains its ideas. Review summaries for meaning and organisation, and dictation for missing words and spelling. These are starting points for investigation; four score numbers alone cannot identify every task-level weakness.Â
Keep your routine manageable around work or study in Western Australia. Give the weakest area a focused daily practice block, review the errors, and use timed practice to check whether you can apply the correction under pressure.Â
Check older results separately
If you sat PTE Academic on or before 6 August 2025, use Home Affairs’ earlier-test table. The department says those results may be accepted until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa. That is not an automatic validity extension for every application.Â
At PTE PRO, we recommend building your preparation around the requirement that applies to you and the errors visible in your practice. Our Perth classes page explains the face-to-face coaching and feedback available across all four skills.
